Canoe Outrigger

A canoe outrigger can come in many forms and provide many functions. Canoe outriggers can provide stability, a swimming platform, or even a way to attach a sail to your canoe. Most canoe companies provide their own line of outriggers however generic outriggers can be found. Before searching for an outrigger for your canoe make sure you know the make model and size of your canoe to avoid a possible purchasing mistake.

Traditionally a canoe outrigger is a long pole attached to the middle or back end of a canoe which supports buoy on either side of the canoe. This makes tipping a canoe virtually impossible. You might consider getting a canoe outrigger if you enjoy fishing. If you are a fly fisher or simply like to stand while fishing you will find it very difficult to do so in a canoe with out an outrigger. Another reason to consider using one is if you have children. Children often don't realize that even just a small amount of moving around can tip a canoe. Providing your canoe with an outrigger your children will be and feel safer.

Another very popular type of canoe outrigger is one which consists of two poles attached to the middle of the canoe that extend in one direction. These polls attach to just one buoy and often have a platform in between the boat and the buoy. This type of canoe outrigger provides the canoe user with a platform in which to stand, swim to, snorkel from, or attach a sail. Because getting in and out of a canoe from the water without tipping the canoe is virtually impossible these types of canoe outriggers are very handy for swimmers.

Finding the right canoe outrigger for your canoe can be a bit tricky. Try to find one produced by the manufacturer of your canoe first. The internet can provide you with help on finding an outrigger which will fit your canoe. You may also find a used outrigger for a better price then buying a new one. Be careful and make sure you check the buoy for damage before buying.

Tips & Tricks

Stuff those bulkheads

You may have noticed, but loading up the aft compartment on your touring kayak can significantly improve handling. The only problem is that gear in a half-filled compartment tends to shift when your boat rolls, which can cause real problems when you try to right your kayak. One solution to this problem is to fill that unused space with air bags. And if you really want to stuff that aft stowage area, try loading it through the cockpit instead of the hatch.
