Kayak Cover

Kayaking has become a very popular sport among people around the world. This high intensity sport requires some special equipment that can be very pricy. When making a purchase such as this, you want to ensure that it will last for years to come. One way to protect your kayak is to purchase a kayak cover.

A kayak cover protects the equipment in many different ways. First and foremost, if you store your kayak outside, the cover will protect it from all of the elements. Rain and sunlight can cause color to fade as well as make the material start to degenerate.

Also, these covers can protect your kayak from UV light as well. Just like your skin, the covering of the equipment can be damaged by this UV light if not protected properly. The UV light causes the materials in the kayak to

oxidize which weakens it significantly. Kayak covers also protect your vessel from bugs. Many bugs love to get into the hollow portion of the kayak and build nests because the walls provide protection for them. Birds are also known to nest in them for the same reasons.

As there are many types of kayaks, there are many types of kayak covers as well. It is important when selecting a cover that you choose the one that is best suited for your individual kayak. You want the kayak cover to fit snugly over the frame of the boat in order to receive the most protection. As well as finding the perfect fit for your kayak, you want to select a cover that best suites your needs. There are different covers that accommodate different types of equipment. For example, there are covers that are made wider to accommodate fishing rigs.

Also, there are several styles as well. The two most popular are the sack style and the zip up style. With the sack cover, you simply slip your kayak into the cover and one end will have some sort of drawstring apparatus.

After the equipment is fitted into the sack, you simply pull the string shut. With the zip up style, you place the kayak into the cover and then zip the cover together. There are many different variations of this style of cover regarding where the cover is located. Another popular style of cover is one that covers only the cockpit. This is great for using during the season because it protects your kayak while being small, easy to transport, and easy to remove and put on.

Using a kayak cover can greatly increase the life of your equipment. The average price of a cover is around 50 dollars, a nominal fee that will save you money down the road.

Tips & Tricks

Conserving water

Out on the ocean, you may be surrounded by water, but that doesn't mean you can drink any of it. Paddling a touring kayak is physically demanding, and staying healthy and strong requires upwards of 2-3 quarts of fresh water per day. Every successful sea kayaking adventure requires careful water management.

Some tips include brushing your teeth with salt water, and collecting rainwater runoff in a tarp; even if it's not suitable for drinking, you can use it for bathing water. You can also bathe in salt water. The salty residue comes off with a good toweling, and even your hair will feel clean with a good rubbing out. Another trick is to cook rice instead of pasta when you're low on water. With rice, the water is absorbed, while pasta water is thrown out after cooking.
