When traveling with a sea or whitewater kayak, there are many
factors to take into consideration regarding safety. While you
can transport the boat in the back of a truck, you risk the
equipment sliding out and falling out of the truck. A much safer
way to transport kayaks is by using a
kayak truck rack.
There are many different types of racks that each have their own
benefits. One type is a roof rack. These racks simply sit on the
roof of your car and have the equipment needed to safely attach
the kayak. What is great about these racks is that they can be
used on any type of car. You can also transport more than one
kayak with these racks as well. Installation for this type is
very easy because it just simply fits onto the roof of your car.
Another type of kayak truck rack is the bed rack. These racks
are exclusively made for trucks and make for very sturdy
transportation. The way that these racks work is that the front
part of it attaches to the roof

of the truck (just like the roof rack). Then a system of bars extends from this portion to the end of the bed of the truck. At the end of the bars, there are legs that go into the bed and attach. The huge advantage that these racks have over other ones is the length. These racks are made to accommodate the entire length of the equipment.
Because the entire kayak is supported with these racks, rather that just the middle, the transportation will be much more sturdy and secure. Another advantage of these racks is that they are easily detachable. If you are not currently using the truck to transport kayaks, you can detach the rack and use the truck for whatever you need it for.
Something that is unique to this kayak truck rack is that it can be converted to allow compatibility with a trailer. If you need to use your truck to haul your kayaks as well as your camper or trailer, this system can be reversed to do so.
Rather than attaching at the bed of the truck (which would interfere
with space needed to tow a camper) these racks can be converted to attach to
the front of the truck instead. This provides you with the ability to safely
haul both items without interference.
Using a kayak truck rack will greatly increase the durability of
transporting your kayak. As well as increasing durability, using these racks
make transportation much safer by reducing the chances of slips and falls.
Got Gear?
Is that PFD of yours getting a little frayed around the edges? Is that spray skirt springing a few leaks? Well check out one of our featured merchants for great online deals on kayaking accessories.
Retail sporting goods stores are great, but most only carry a limited selection of kayaking gear, and expect to pay the full retail price. Online merchants, on the other hand, offer a wide selection of name-brand kayaks and paddling accessories, and at discounted prices. And online shopping offers a convenient, comfortable alternative to driving all over town looking for that hard to find item.

Being heard
If you're sea kayaking at night, or in fog or other
poor visibility conditions, always bring along
something that will get you heard by your paddling
partners or anyone else on the water.
This can be as
simple as a whistle stowed away in your PFD, or a
handheld foghorn, which are especially effective in
fog (hence the name). These air powered horns need
to be checked periodically for corrosion or leaks in
the valves.
Test it out in your backyard before
heading out on your trip (your neighbors will love
your for it). As with all emergency gear, you want
to make sure it'll work when you most need it.
